Artie Shaw Re-Creates His Great '38 Band - Capitol ST 2992

Here's a re-posting by request of a wonderful Artie Shaw album
that I previously had posted via Rapidfire.

Artie Shaw Re-Creates His Great '38 Band -

Walt Levinsky was personally selected by Artie to re-create the Shaw solos on each of these classic tracks. Artie himself conducted and produced these sessions recorded in Capitol's NYC Studios. Musicians are not listed on the LP, although in an interview Shaw mentions Buddy Morrow (trb), Toots Mondello (alto)  Al Klink &  Billy Staplin (ts), Bernie Privin, Mel Davis (trp), Bernie Layton (p) and Don Lamond.  Capitol should have released this on CD. It's the 100 birthday of Artie Shaw. This is a superb update of some of his best recordings. I've posted in both mp3 and wav. format.

Side One: Traffic Jam, Begin the Beguine, Lover Come Back to Me, Zigeuner, What is this Thing Called Love, It Had to Be You

Side Two: Softly, As In a Morning Sunrise, Octoroon, Nightmare, Back Bay Shuffle, Jungle Drums, Copenhagen

Note: This re-posting is only in mp3 format. Titles do not appear in posted order.

  2. Capitol Records are not interested in their pre-Beatles catalog. The best one can hope for is for a specialist reissue label to obtain a licence from Capitol to come out with a CD reissue of this.

  3. Thanks for your input on this LP. One source says it was recorded in 1963 - another says 1968. I think 68 is the correct date - but, can't be sure.

  5. Thanks that's excellent work. Could you make mp3s for every single track and put them into a rar folder on rapidshare instead of one track? Regards Sam

  6. I believe 1968 was the correct year because my late father bought two copies of this album in 1969 - one for recording to reel to reel tape once and never played again and the other to just play any ole time (lotsa snaps, crackles and pops). I have both copies and digitized the near mint copy to mp3 a few years ago. While I thoroughly enjoy his earlier releases and even though Walt Levinsky is playing his solos, it sounds fresh and live even in 2010. My nickel's worth....

  7. I thought Dick Johnson was the clarinetist selected by Artie Shaw for his solos. He used him in the 1980s re-creation band.

  8. Dick Johnson took over the band in the 1980s. It was Walt Levinsky on this session. Trust me!

  9. I was Artie's neighbor for many years and attended his estate sale. At that sale I purchased Master # ST-1&2-2992 titled Artie Shaw Re-Creates His Great '38 Band. This is a 12" LP with a Capital label and typed in information. It looks as though it has never been played. I wanted to keep it but my situation requires that I liquidate a few things. I was going to put it on Ebay. Does anyone have a clue what it may be worth. Thanks.

  10. I have this on 33 1/3 vinyl -- although it's the size of a 45. It only has 5 songs on it (It Had to Be You, Copenhagen, Traffic Jam, What is This Thing Called Love, and Jungle Drums).
