SPLENDOR IN THE BRASS - Chuck Sagle & His Orchestra 1962

Splendor in the Brass was recorded for Reprise (R-6047) in 1962. Sagle was a 35 year old trumpet player from Aurora, IL who learned to arrange while leading a Navy band in the Pacific in 1944. He spent time in Chicago after the war where arranged for Dave Garroway's early TV series. In NYC he free lanced for various recording companies. In 1962 he joined Reprise in Hollywood. This album is packed with great jazz and studio musicians including: Buddy Collette, Ted Nash, Wilbur Schwartz, Gene Cipriano, Milt Berhart, Conrad Gozzo, Shorty Sherock, John Best, Ray Triscari, Cappy Lewis, Dick Nash, Lou Levy, Emil Richards, Red Callendar, Larry Bunker, Vince DeRosa, Ray Sherman Louis Singer, & Al Stoller. It's always been one of my personal favorites. This is a mono copy, unfortunately, but sound quality is very good. Enjoy.

Side One: When Sunny Gets Blue, A Taste of Honey, Bernie's Tune, The Man with A Horn, Playboy's Theme

Side Two: On Green Dolphin Street, Love For Sale, A Night in Tunisia, Easy Living, The Moon Was Yellow, Brassanctified (Sagle orginal)

  3. I discovered this album when stationed at NATO base in Iceland w the Navy in '64. I sat in on trumpet with the admiral's band. Several of them were talking about the terrific run by the entire trumpet section echoing the Dizzy Gillespie solo. Still have the album, still my favorite.
