Gene Norman presents Gerry Mulligan-Shorty Rogers - MODERN SOUNDS

Gene Norman produced these two sessions released by Capitol featuring some great Hollywood studio musicians playing it "cool." Among the sidemen is a native of my home town, Dubuque, Ia - John Graas. Graas is considered by first musician to play modern jazz on the french horn. He's featured in both bands. This is a digitally restored LP copy. There is a rare copy of the album available as a Japanese import.
An interesting article on John Graas, written by his niece,  can be found at

Side One - Shorty Rogers, trumpet - Art Pepper, Alto Sax - Jimmy Guiffre, Tenor Sax - Gene Englund, Tuba - John Graas, French Horn - Hampton Hawes, piano - Don Bagley, bass - Shelley Manne, drums

Four Mothers - Didi- Sam and the Lady  - Popo- Over the Rainbow - Apropos recorded October 1951 in Hollywood

Side Two - Gerry Mulligan, baritone sax, piano - Bud Shank, alto sax - Don Dvidson, baritone sax - Chet Baker, Pete Condoli, trumpets - Bob Enevoldsen, trombone - John Grass, French horn - Ray Siegel, tuba - Joe Mondragan, bass - Chico Hamilton or Larry Bunker, drums.

I also have a very rare copy of the John Grass Jazz Symphony. Any interest?

  2. Hello, I am John GRAAS's niece. I wanted to point out the misspelling of GRAAS that you have - it isn't GRASS. Also the URL I've included is a bio about John Graas that I made for the Encyclopedia Dubuque.
    Thanks, Susan

  3. Please correct John's last name - it's GRAAS, not GRASS. I am his niece and have included a link to a bio that I've done on him.
